Texturing a Ceiling by Hand 1. First of all, buy a bucket of premixed compound for drywall joint. You can get it from almost any hardware store. You will also need a wide- bladed taping knife or you could either use a straight- edged trowel (the best measurement would be 8 to 12 inches wide). You will use the latter to spread the joint equally on the wall. If you do not want the joint be really smooth than then you could also spread it with your hands.
2. Protect the furniture and floor in the room with some cloth or something like that. If you can then you should take it out of the room as it will get pretty messy.
3. If there is any old wallpaper on the ceiling then you should remove it. The result will be much better if your ceiling is clean beforehand. Otherwise the drywall compound can make the old wallpaper wet and after some time it will come off the ceiling on its own. The compound should stuck to the ceiling quite easily.
4. Now the next step is to edge the whole ceiling with a very thin layer of compound. The layer should be about 1/8 of an inch. If you are going for a more rough look than you could also put a thicker layer of the compound on the ceiling. Do not worry about being extremely perfect as actually the point is to get an interesting varying texture.
5. There are many ways how you can change the texture. You can use old paintbrushes, sponges and other things like that to swirl and stroke the wet compound. If you want some kind of pre- created design then you can use a stencil or also simply your fingers for whatever design you like.
6. Then just add more compound and texture it. Vary those actions until you have covered the whole ceiling.
