Sealants And Adhesives

Sealants and adhesives play an important role in the installation of wall and ceiling products. Walls & Ceilings magazine typically devotes a complete issue to sealants and adhesives each year.

Adhesives are typically used to adhere drywall, paneling, and EPS (expanded polystyrene board) to substrates. Drywall adhesives are discussed at more length in the section on fasteners.

In the appliation of EIFS the EPS board is commonly attached to the substrate with a cementitious adhesive that is also known as "basecoat." Every EIFS manufacturer has specifications as to how adhesives are to be used to fasten EPS board with their product.

Sealants play a very important role in the installatino of walls and ceilings porducts. Proper sealing is necessary with EIFS at openings where the EIFS material meets any other type of construction material. Sealants must be applied at windows, doors, and at any other location where unlike products are joined to EIFS in an EIFS clad building.

Curtain wall applications use a sealant between panels which is oftentimes applied over a "backer rod" which is installed between the panels to help fill the void between the panels to creat a tight union between panels. The sealant is then applied over the backer rod and protects it from the weather and moisture.
