Can you clean acoustic ceilings safely?

The house I am buying , the owner smokes and the ceilings have that popcorn stuff on them. Can I clean them to get rid of the cigarette smoke and if so what can I use effectively?

Answer:
Whether or not there's any asbestos depends on the age of the popcorn on the ceiling. Years ago (1960's) us drywallers wouldn't buy any drywall mud or popcorn unless it clearly stated on the bag that it contained asbestos. Shows you what we knew at the time. Anyway, the popcorn may contain asbestos. As far as scraping it off, that is only possible if it has never been painted. It it's been painted, the only way to get rid of it is to take down the entire ceiling. If it's been painted you can repaint it but washing is impractical due to the coarseness of the material. If it has not been painted and does not contain asbestos, it is relatively simple, but exceedingly messy, to scrape it off. I just scraped an unpainted popcorn ceiling last spring. You will find the taping job under the popcorn to be less than satisfactory but it can be easily remedied by applying additional coats of drywall mud to the joints and fasteners. I would require a $1500.00 reduction in the price of the home from the seller so you can hire the work done. If you're not a professional drywall contractor, as I have been since 1960, you don't want the hassle of this job. Good luck!
